  1. I think maby you could offer more rewards. That would be helpful! Also: Can you give us more holidays?

  2. I think the school should do something about the football field because they put manure down on it and now we cant play on it, and I'm talking for everyone when i say it is boring on the blacktop, and too crowded. The football field has more room and you can actually play football and do other thing without accidentally hitting someone with a ball or running into someone. You also cant run on the blacktop because of how crowded it is. Also, I think we should have more rewards for the renissaunce cards, and not just the Gold cards, but all the other cards too. (Blue card is hardly ever called). If we do these things, I think it will be helpful for the learning enviroment!

  3. Thank you for your input. Let me try to answer the football field question. We have noticed that the field is in poor shape and has many bare spots. In order to get it prepared for summer use or fall use, we must limit the amount of activities on the field. The fertilizer and seed will help that. We have to give it some opportunity to grow. The second reason is that the high school football field may need some repair. If that can not be done soon, we may need to use Palmer field for some events.I would love to hear some ideas on how the present grounds of the middle school could be used efficiently for recess. Maybe add some basketball courts? Let me know. Thanks!

  4. I ma senior here at Florence and to address the question I think that honestly the only thing you can do is try to encourage kids that its okay to be studious and smart. I have taken every hard class that is relevant to my college and career pursuit and have felt somewhat challenged. I believe students get exactly what they put into school. this goes for not only florence, but all schools. It seems to me that many students feel like its "uncool" to be smart and maybe if we could instill the thought that its okay to succeed people would feel more comfortable challenging themselves with harder class choices. Also, if we were to offer AP classes it would greatly challenge those looking for a challenge and prepare further for college.

  5. I commend you for your very valid comments. Statistics do show that those students who apply themselves in school, take part in activities such as the arts, vocational education, sports, etc., are the most successful in life. That equates to better jobs, higher salaries, and a better style of living. You never know what career you are going to pursue in 5 years. You may beat that next candidate to the job because you had a higher GPA. It may not be evident now, but when you look back in 10 or 20 years, you will see the success stories. We will see who is cool then. Keep up the good work! We want to challenge you. We are hoping to offer some new classes next year, maybe even some honors classes or dual credit for high school and college. Your input is important to us! Thanks!

  7. I think a representative at the high school should go to a city council meeting and propose the idea of kids in the Fremont county area to have Mondays off. I mean, do you know how much money the school would save if they didn't have to pay for gas for the buses? A lot. The school could save up the money to fix the school because really, how long is this school going to last? Not long if it keeps sliding downhill. The parents are going to start to find out, and maybe retract their kids from the school, and then, the school would lose even more money. Just think it over. Freshmans like me want to be able to attend this school until their senior year, not just their sophomore year.

  8. Hi Freshman, Thanks for your questions. I know there a lot of districts who go to school four days a week. Since we have Wednesday afternoons for staff development, we have about a 4.7 day school week. You are correct. It would save money but it would also hurt some of our employees because they would only work and get paid for 4 days per week. I actually believe we should provide more time for education to help all of our students be more successful. But, if the Colorado Department of Education cuts our funding, we will have to look at many ideas. The group that decides our calendar and policies is the Fremont RE-2 School Board.
As far as the high school, we are working on the cracks and trying to find out what is causing them. We have had several companies out there already looking at it. One company drilled to find out what happening around the outside of the school. We have engineers coming in over spring break to do more drilling and to help assess the problem. It is mainly the floor in the commons and the track area for right now. We are not seeing any structural damage that would affect walls or ceilings. We have been told the building is structurally sound. The high school will be there for many, many years.

  9. I think I saw some tether ball poles getting set up on the Florence Middle School grounds. I think that is a great idea but, we need more room.

  10. Hi. I am a junior and we are writing grant papers for my CP english class. I was wondering if there was ever any talk about maybe adding a swimming pool to our high school. If so i would like to know if any plans about cost, construction, ect. was ever drawn up. Thank You

  11. I do not know if we have any information on a swimming pool proposal. I will do some checking and get back to you. It is a great idea but I am sure at the time we built the high school it was a cost factor. Great question!

  12. Im a 7th grader at fremont middle school and that school needs help. Students dont do their work. . most of them are failing and at risk of being held back. Our school os under watch(told by one of the sub.'s) and that is just not good. This school is such a. . i dont even know how to explain it. . i used to love school but now i dont like going to school cause people are so just dumb. .drama, fighting, it all so stupid we dont go to school to argue with people we go to learn and that school is just needs help.

  13. I appreciate your email. It sounds like you are frustrated with how things are going. I would hope you could go talk to one of the principals or the counselor about this. Going to school to learn is a great focus. Please do not lose that. Maybe you can be the example to help other students. Maybe you could find a leadership role in the school that would help show others why they are there. I know the principlas and staff are working hard to improve the culture at the school and to work toward higher achievement. It will take the work of the students also. Thanks!

  14. Regarding the swimming pool - There was talk about that when the school was built but no plans were created. Because the cost would be an aditional $1 million to $1.5 million, the decision was to go with an auditorium instead. That way, there were facilities for sports and for the arts. We are trying to find a way to secure transportation from Florence to the Recreation District in Canon City so that our students can take advantage of those facilities. Of course, if we were able to get a grant, we could certainly look at it again. Tnanks for your interest!

  15. I'd like to know if the Colorado Havoc organization has paid it's electric bill for the use of the football field last year? Also, when will the students be permitted to use it again during their lunch time?

  16. I agree with the 7th grader. Our school environment is being ruined because of people who fail to get their work done, or just don't care. Tons of freshmen ignore the fact that their freshman year means a lot in their high school career, and they don't feel it will impact their high school grades at all. My friend is failing two of her freshman classes and doesn't care, because she wants to drop out when she's eighteen anyways. I don't believe some people care anything about their grades, especially when it's their freshman year. So, like cscriven said, get your work in on time, and don't slack off. As many rumors as you hear, high school isn't always fun, and it is A LOT of work. And, these grades will impact your GPA alot also. I was getting a 3.4 GPA until I got a D in P.E., and a C in math. Now, it's at a really low mark. So, always do your best. And don't get involved with the wrong kind of people.

  17. I also have one more concern. I am a freshman at Florence High School, and the Swine Flu has worried so many people in school. I've heard a couple of rumors that if a couple more people get Swine Flu in Fremont County, the schools will shut down. Is it true? And if it is, will it cut into our summer break?

  18. Why are we saving Palmer Field for the HAVOC? Our own students cannot play or have PE on the field and who the owns the field? Last time I checked the taxpayers own the field not the HAVOC, how much money is Greg Fieth pocketing on this rental? - they should play behind the elementary school, pay their bill and the district let the middle school kids play on the field and the high school soccer team should play there also ..... what a joke you guys are!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks for your questions!
Palmer field - The main reason we are limiting classes on the field is becuase we will be working on the high school field this summer. A company will be coming in to pull the sod back, pull the watering system up, level the field, and put it all back together. We are hoping this will all be completed in time for the beginning of sports in August. If it is not completed, we may have to use Palmer Field for some events. We had major bare spots on Palmer field in March. We needed to fertilize, over water, and reduce the traffic on the field in order to get it back in shape. We are going to allow the Havoc to use the field for 5 games only. This community program also brings fans and revenue into the district and the town. Any remaining fees for the field will be paid by the Havoc by the end of the season.
The middle school grounds are very nice. Do you have any ideas on how we can make that area more fun? Any equipment that might work there?

  20. The Swine Flu
We have been monitoring the situation daily. Between the state, the county, and the city, we have been emailing and talking about all of the scenarios. At first, the CDC was recommending closure of schools if we had any cases of the H1N1 flu. Now, they are saying it hasn't been that serious and we may stay open. If we see any local cases, we will meet with a large group of community groups to make the decision. Student safety is our first priority. If we ever did have to close down school, we might need to make up some of the days during the summer. The State of Colorado requires that we attend school 1056 hours per year. So, stay healthy, wash your hands often, use sanitizer, and stay home if you are sick.
3 more weeks - We can make it!

  22. This is to my Former principal, Mr. Lucas. Thank you for your guidance 3 years of high school. You are a true role model for students and teachers. You have a genuine love to students and you see the best in them. Without you, I wouldn't have receive my diploma this past Friday. Thank You. And MANY of us miss you. B.

  23. Thanks for your information regarding HAVOC. However, was the delinquent light bill eventually paid by HAVOC or was it paid by the district using tax-payer money?

If it was paid using tax-payer money; why and who made that decision?

  24. I'd like to see an email address or a point of contact for ALL school board directors on this website. Also, could you update your minutes to the school board meetings?

    ReplyDelete
  25. We are working to get the recent Board minutes updated on the website each month. As always, it takes time to keep up with technology. We will work on that.
Please feel free to send any comments for the Board through the Superintendent's email at cscriven@re-2.org. Also, another way to reach the Board is through mailing them a letter in care of the school district. We will see if the Board is able to publish their email adddresses. We still have some members that have difficulty accessing email due to technological factors. Thanks!

  26. I understand that piercing are a huge deal at our school. Think about it...it's more of a hassle when the teacher has to stop the class to ask the student to take something out. If the other students get destracted it's their own fault. And the whole thing about the test scores....Harrison high school in the Springs has very high CSAP scores. They're allowed to have whatever they want pierced. Do you honestly think it has ANYTHING to do with test scores? I believe you are just using that as an excuse. I've talked to many parents about this and they are all very upset. They paid for their child to get the piercing and you guys take it away? Unless you plan on making this school a privite school...you cannot control our dress code this tightly.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Maybe the student/students shouldn't wear the piercings in the first place like it says in the dress code. Then, the teacher wouldn't have to interupt classroom instuction to address the issue. Sounds like you need to be a parent and not a "friend".

  28. Talk to "many" parents? or the town drumbeaters?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm neither a student nor an employee I am a parent. My recommendation is that as a school being the central focal point of our Childs education, and we as the supporting community fail in one of the most important aspects of a student’s education. That is teaching each and every one of our students that self accountability is essential to success. I think that there needs to be some kind of contract of accountability between the parents the faculty and the student. With follow up meetings based on the individual student need (weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, etc.). If the student is unwilling to be accountable, and the parent is unwilling to make them accountable, who is the school to be made accountable for success or failure. Let’s set reasonable goals for each student and then help insure that they are somewhat successfully in achieving the goals, failure is the most demoralizing thing to a young mind. Feed lot education isn't a method to succeed with each student. They all mature at different times in life with different interests. Not all goals are obtained through a College curriculum. Now the million dollar question how do we achieve this and meet Federal, state, district, requirements???? Maybe we need to educate the parents at the beginning of a school year, making it a requirement for registration on what they are responsible for. To insure that they are aware what it takes on their part for their child to succeed. Written test if need be, Or we stand by and watch our future community leaders look at failure as acceptable.

  30. I say that the four day week will be a good choice. It will save the school money and make more time for education. On the day we have off we could come in and get our work caught up, practice sports, learn things we don't get, and so on.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that we shouldnt do any random drug testing. I think its wrong and I really really hate the fact that the school want to do that. It's just gonna make Florence look worse when kids get caught and then it'll be one big mess. Also, one lunch? It's already crowded enough as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i will be a junior this year. Taking out challenging and amazing classes along with the few teachers that cared more about the students than anything was probably the worst idea that you could have made. because of those bad decisions many of your students have left this school district. Listening to students that cry at board meeting about how important a person or a class is and then taking that away is what is putting this district in such bad condition.

    ReplyDelete
  33. One way you can help me is to get rid of all the dead beats who don't care. All they do is take up the teachers' time. Have some discipline in the schools. Kids get away with all kinds of stuff and when there is discipline it is not distributed out fairly.
